Summer can be hard on your skin, leaving it dry and lifeless. There is the harsh heat, the threat of sunburn, salt water from the ocean, or chlorine from the swimming pool. All of these elements can take their toll on the skin.
If you find your skin feeling dry this summer, keep it hydrated through the following measures:
- Drink plenty of water – The best way to hydrate your skin is to keep your body hydrated inside. Drinking plenty of water will not only be good for your skin, but it will also benefit your heart and kidneys.
- Apply olive oil – Olive oil is rich in antioxidants and fatty acids that help moisturize the skin and keep it healthy. Massaging some olive oil into your skin right before you take a shower will prevent soap and warm water from drying your skin out.
- Use gentle, natural soap – Avoid soaps that are heavy with chemicals. Use only those that contain natural ingredients such as aloe vera.
- Turn down the heat in the shower – Hot water removes the oil from your skin. While it is relaxing to use hot water when you shower or bathe, it is a surefire way to dry out your skin.
- Add avocado to your diet – Avocado is rich in healthy fats that will help you hydrate your skin. Apply it as a facemask. Remove the avocado after five minutes and wash your face with lukewarm water.
- Use a humidifier – Using a humidifier will help prevent the drying out of your skin. Humidifiers will also keep your respiratory systems functioning efficiently. Set your heater or air conditioner to a moderate temperature. Extremes at either end of the spectrum will dry out your skin.
- Pass the honey – Raw honey provides a natural way to hydrate the skin. Honey has anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. Apply raw honey to dry areas of the skin, and leave it for about five minutes before washing it off with lukewarm water.
- Eat pumpkin – Adding pumpkin to your diet will help hydrate your skin. It provides a lot of nourishment that will keep your skin healthy and moist.
- Eat plenty of fruits – Most fruits have high water content. They are also rich in vitamins and minerals needed for skin health.
- Omega-3 fatty acids – Omega-3 fatty acids are responsible for the production of oil in your skin. Try eating foods such as fish that are rich in these acids.
